Lancaster, Pennsylvania is the 2nd oldest inland city in the US, founded in 1718, and is stuffed full of history and beauty. The 1744-commenced graveyard of St. James Episcopal Church is home to a couple famous people as well as many others. One of its residents is a woman named Anne Coleman. She was engaged to President James Buchanan until 1819, she or her father broke the engagement and she overdosed on laudanum shortly thereafter. Buchanan hoped to have his eventual interment at St. James, too, but the Coleman family threw a fit about it, so he ended up in a graveyard that’s now pretty run down, in a not-so-nice part of town. Some might feel he deserves it; Anne’s father and a country that likes effective presidents, among others.
