This pair of paintings was done at and around a museum festival in late April. I wish I could begin and complete two paintings in a few hours, but I can’t, so a lot happened pre-festival in the belief that people would rather see real painting instead of endless drawing I am so glad I did, too. It was beastly hot that day and the sun beat down relentlessly; of course choosing a scene to paint that involved standing in shade was just not challenging enough for me. I think I would have died if not for Carol the volunteer angel and her offers of cold, full water bottles – I certainly couldn’t have turned out any work that wasn’t completely abstract. Besides the heat and bright, bright sun, I really had fun with these paintings. The topsy-turvy conflagration of gears symbolize the workings of the universe to me. As are most gear-driven machines, the world is a collection of parts I’ll never understand.
