The ultimate goal of most religious movements is to enter a higher reality. The members of the Sufi Muslim Mevlevi, known as whirling dervishes, spin in a rhythmic rotation on their spiritual quest. They turn toward the truth to reach perfection, emptying their minds of all distraction in their sacred dance. They enter a state where dizziness has no place and return from their journeys as members of the solid, stable reality we all try to inhabit. Watching the mesmerizing dance of the dervishes doesn’t get the viewer to an ethereal plane; you just get dizzy … and kind of wistful.
