The Lycian civilization was a small but great one. Its members were fiercely independent, hard-working and very civilized. They were non-Hellenistic, speaking their own Indo-European (but non-Greek)language and using an alphabet of their own creation. Evidence of their ancestral cult beliefs dots the cliffs of southern Turkey. These cliffs, near the city of Demre, were visited by the artist on a rainy day. During her maneuvers to get the best view, she got stuck on the slippery rocks and could not escape the tombs. Incidentally, the Turkish word for “HELP!” is “IMDAT!” Remember it: you never know when the word might come in handy.
