Dylan Thomas, Swansea native called it “an ugly, lovely town.” A later writer called it something like “a pretty, ugly city” (slightly different wording) which was probably more to the point at one time: Swansea’s location and ecological structure make it a center for mining and shipping. Swansea is wonderful: a balanced whole of pretty and practical. The city center and some of the docks are efficient and businesslike, but the coastal area and spruced-up pier sides are livable and charming. I tried to incorporate the dual nature of Swansea into this painting; its picturesque qualities are enhanced by direct simplicity.
