Although one might assume a passage tomb to be a huge pile of dirt with some bones burrowed into it, this is not the complete truth. It would be more accurate to say that a passage tomb is a pile of dirt and rocks with a few skeletons and maybe a few tchachkes to entertain them in the next world. Passage tombs are comprised of intricate layers of humongous boulders, small stones and clay. They are carefully engineered so that the immense weight of all that rubble stays in place, not caving in on the stone passages inside. Neolithic people were pretty advanced – The passages of the Co. Meath tombs haven’t seen a drop of rain leakage since it was built. Their passages are aligned with solar events.
