The Tuscan town of Montecatini is divided into the sections of Alto (atop the mountain) and Terme (at the base). In1897, work began on a tram to connect the two parts. The result was the Funicular. Montecatini visitors and residents have ridden the funicular from the busy elegance of the lower half to the lofty peace of its height and back down again almost continuously since its opening in 1898. The mountaintop tram station is surrounded by serenity; the ambience is otherworldly but just in case you miss the earth’s solidity you are reminded of its accessibility.
