I wrote in the other Portovenere painting description that you can’t avoid the town’s beauty. I stand by that statement, but will admit that it can be just out of visual reach. Most of the painters in the group were high up in the hotel; their rooms had balconies or windows from which they could gaze unfettered at the beauty below. Not me: I was tucked into a lower level room. I viewed the dancing flash of Portovenere from behind barred glass. The good news: I really like to paint scenes with fences, gates and bars in front of them. I sketched this view from my room a number of times until I finally decided seeing Portovenere from outside of it would be much more fun.
