All these Athenians lining the streets, the crowd laced with bishops –what were they waiting for? After much confusion and several photographs of bishops who may not have enjoyed my camera’s attention, I found out: the Theban bishop Ieronymous had been elected to succeed the recently deceased Christodoulos as Archbishop of Athens and leader of the Orthodox Church. The Athenians were waiting for his parade. I had secured a scene as powerful to me as the one they were about to witness was to them.
